Shannon Bruns

Hi, my name is Shannon Bruns, and I'm a creative. Shannon Bruns Woodworking is a side project I started because I needed a way to be creative while working with my hands.

In addition to woodworking, I have a background in art, design, and photography. I'm a software engineer by trade (creative outlet) but writing code all day only fulfills part of my problem-solving sensibility. Although I enjoy my career as a programmer, I like to get away from the computer and create with my hands – I like stepping outside of the digital space and creating tangible items I can hold. Making things that are beautiful, functional, and possibly generational is the goal.

I have a simple approach - when I create something, I want to make it the best I can make it, and I want it to have the quality you only get from meticulous attention to detail and love of the craft. However, even with attention to detail and love of the craft, mistakes happen. Part of quality is the byproduct of learning from making mistakes and fixing those mistakes evokes creative problem solving and understanding, which I enjoy. Sometimes, fixing a mistake can lead to a new idea, concept, or even a better approach – all part of the journey. Having said that though, I don't like to cut corners; the way I see it, if I'm sloppy or less accurate for the sake of time, someone will know, and I will know. I am obligated to the trees I'm using, the clients I'm providing for, and myself, so at the end of a project, that little extra time and effort I put in were worth it.
